KADALUNDI

Originating from the Cherakomban hills in the Western Ghats, the Kadalundi River flows westward through Malappuram district and divides into two branches before reaching its destination. One branch, known as Vadakumbad River, joins the Chaliyar at the Beypore estuary, while the other branch, retaining the name Kadalundi River, forms small islands before emptying into the Arabian Sea at Kadalundi Kayal. This makes Kadalundi Panchayat a region surrounded by water on all sides.

Historically, Kadalundi was described in chronicles as the administrative center of the Chera kings. In the early 12th century, with the decline of the second Chera dynasty, local governance passed into the hands of the Parappanad Kovilakars.

Trade relations with foreign countries played a decisive role in shaping the cultural transformation of this village. Libraries and reading halls, which acted as nurseries for the national movement, were also active here during the freedom struggle.

Kottakkunnu, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, Chaliyam, Pulimood, the beaches, and the lighthouse are among the major attractions of Kadalundi.
