VAZHAKKAD

This panchayat, which shares its borders with Malappuram and Kozhikode districts, is a land that, even before the formation of Kerala, initiated the cultural and educational renaissance movements in Malabar.

Along the journey by the Chaliyar River, there is a name that cannot be passed without mention: K. A. Rahman. He was a leader who, for the first time in Kerala, took a stand against environmental pollution. A humanitarian who devoted even his own life to preserve Chaliyar for future generations.
Rahman Sahib, who was the president of Vazhakkad Panchayat, led the fight against the industrial giant Gwalior Rayon, which had written Chaliyar’s death song through severe pollution, and forced it to cease operations. Rahman succumbed to cancer caused by inhaling toxic waste expelled by the factory, but the factory eventually shut down.

The Chaliyar Action Council thus became part of history, inspiring and empowering environmental anti-pollution movements across Kerala.

The Vazhakkad Association Qatar is a cultural and creative collective of Vazhakkad natives who, seeking sustenance from their homeland, settled and thrived in the distant land of Qatar.
A “Vakh” is not just a word; it is a collective that, through determination, community initiatives, and humanitarian work, has made history.
