A panchayat bordered by the Chaliyar River on one side and the Chekkunnu Hills on the other, Urangattiri has a history that dates back to the Megalithic age. It is believed that the road passing through Kallarattikkal Ward was constructed by Tipu Sultan.
Dense forest streams filled with small waterfalls such as Koorankallu, Thonippara, and Kodumpuzha strengthen the flow of the Chaliyar. Blessed with rich natural beauty, Urangattiri Panchayat is one of the important river islands along the banks of the Chaliyar.
In November 2009, Chaliyar witnessed a tragic incident at Moorkanad Kadavu.
A boat carrying students returning home after school capsized into the depths of the river, resulting in the loss of eight young lives. The expatriate association of Urangattiri in Qatar is QUPA (Qatar Urangattiri Pravasi Association).
This year, QUPA emerged as the overall champions of the Chaliyar Doha Sports Fest, once again proving the fighting spirit and legacy of Urangattiri — a land known for making even the mightiest rivals bow.
Not only in sports, but also in cultural performances, Urangattiri’s artists are lined up to showcase their strength and talent.
